Gun hammer history in Springfield, Oregon began in the early 1800s when a blacksmith namedIsrael Newton set up his forge on the banks of the Columbia River. He fashioned weapons and tools out of wood and iron, and his Hammer company was known for its quality products. In 1892, gunsmith John J. Logan founded a rival forge called the Logan Hammer Company. The two companies competed until 1903 when Logan merged with another maker to form the National Forge Corporation. In 1911, Springfield's first gun show took place at the Brush Armory annex on Northwest First Street. The event was organized by Mayor Claude Bogan and attracted exhibitors from all over America. Gun shows continued to be held in Springfield until 1963, when City Hall moved to downtown and closed the brush armory. Today, you can find remnants of both armsories still standing within walking distance of each other in downtown Springfield.

The city of Springfield was founded in 1847 by James H. Greer and his wife, Anna Maria. The city grew rapidly and became a major center for trade and commerce. In 1865, the City of Springfield adopted a new charter which gave it more autonomy from the County of Douglas. During World War II, Springfield played an important role in the war effort as a munitions plant and tool factory. After the war, the city began to decline as a commercial center and its population fell to around 7,000 people in 1970. However, over the last few decades, Springfield has seen significant growth as a bedroom community for Portland metropolitan area. Today, Springfield is home to over 20 thousand people and is one of the most diverse cities in Oregon.
