Over time, various waves of immigrants arrived – including Germans, Italians, Poles and Hungarians – each adding their own flavor to what would become known as Springfield’s unique culture: Polish for “grandma” (Gromis), Italian for “good food” (Parmesan) and German for “steel plants” (Welding). In 1872, when Congress establishedWalla Walla County, Springfield became its county seat. Reflecting growing industry along Interstate 5 south of town - such as logging operations - developers built thousands of homes around town while increasing traffic congestion on I-5 caused many mills to close or move out altogether. However, with advances in transportation technology and development patterns across Northwest America during this period - including open landfills being converted into vast shopping malls – downtown business gradually recovered throughout the 1990s through attracting new residents from outside districts closer to I-5; today's downtown district includes much popular cultural activity such as music concerts at Alexander Arena and art galleries around Pioneer Courthouse Square
