Springfield, Oregon is a small town located in Eastern Oregon. The town was founded in 1855 by pioneers and settlers from Illinois. The name of the town came from the Springfield River which flows through the town. In 1915, when it was annexed into Portland, Oregon, Springfield became part of that city's history. Today, Springfield is a small community with a population of around 100 people. It has a variety of businesses and organizations that promote local culture and economy. The primary Sector of Springfield's economy is service-sector jobs such as health care aides, mechanics, wait staff and cashiers. The first residents of Springfield were farmers who arrived in 1855 to purchase land along the riverbank. By 1865, there were ten schools in Springfield and over 250 people lived there; most worked on farms or extract coal from the hills nearby. However, by 1870, there were only five families living in Springfield; all had left for better opportunities elsewhere in Oregon or California after the discovery of gold at Fort Hall (now Yakima). In 1915 when it was annexed into Portland as part of its growth as an urban area, Springfield saw a new era when many businesses began to open up including meatpacking plants and breweries. A number of theaters also opened up throughout the decade including one which played host to world champion wrestlers Jesse Owens and World War II veteran Harry S Truman while he served as President during his time in office (1948-1953). In 1966-1967 when Interstate 5 was built through downtown Portland bypassing much of what later became known as Northwest Portland (due eastward) much attention focused on Springfields high school which sat atop an old cotton gin tower surrounded by warehouses used for storage until the early 1970s when they were converted into apartments (the tallest buildings then standing are now called "Thetower" buildings). However despite this focus on downtown development little new housing was constructed within blocks radius of Springfields high school due to zoning laws at that time making it difficult for developers to build near schools without special permits being obtained from city officials. This situation changed however with passage of Measure 97 in 1993 which shifted zoning laws nationwide allowing more density near public transportation hubs like airports and rail yards making adjacent housing possible once again within walking distance for average citizens rather than needing permission from city hall just like before (although some restrictions still remain today such as few buildings being built near transit stops). With increased access to education resources close at hand without having to go far off central business districts like before many families started moving intoSpringfield starting outsmaller communities around it filling needs such as groceries or services not easily accessible else where while also creating demand for places like homes closer to job centers with easy access both ways making life easier not harder especially considering how long ago those regulations changed
The town of Springfield was founded in 1868 by James H. Brown and the town plat was filed on March 10, 1868. The first post office in Springfield was established on April 15, 1870. In 1880, the population of Springfield totaled 304 and it had a school system that included one high school and three elementary schools. The first telephone service in the area was established in 1888. In 1903, the city of Salem annexed part of Springfield to form a new city limits. According to United States Census Bureau estimates from 2000-2006, the population of Springfield has grown by 54%.
