Smithers, Oregon The history of smithers and its surrounding areas goes back to the early 1800s. The first permanent settler in what is now smithers was George Washington who came overland from British Columbia in 1827. He named his new land Smithers after General James H. Stirling, commander of the U.S. troops during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Although there are references to a smithy being established near present day smithers in 1845, it wasn't until 1881 that a formalsmith shop was built on Main Street by W.H. Pritchard and J.F. Smith Sr., both citizens of Springfield Township (later part of Hood River County). In 1902, John Ladd also opened a hardware store on Main Street which continued to operate until 1984 when it closed due to lack of customership. In 1907, the town board adopted an ordinance establishing a school district including smithers as one of its stops along the way; this decision helped spur population growth and development within the limits of Springfield Township while providing education for all local children up until high school graduation requirements were introduced in 1975. Today,smithers stands as an important part of Oregon's history and culture with its rich pioneer heritage and vibrant community spirit alive today thanks to continuous support from its residents and businesses!
The first white settlers in Springfield, Oregon were the Folsom brothers. They moved from what is now Sacramento, California in 1851 and set up a farm on the east side of the Willamette River. The brothers had two children, John Folsom and Anna Folsom. In 1861, John Folsom married Emma Hale and they started a family that would grow to include 32 children. In 1871, the Oregon Legislature passed an act creating a new county in Oregon named after John and Anna Folsom. The county was divided into four parts: eastern part went to Portland, western part went to Springfield, southern part went to Eugene. Anna died in childbirth in 1872 and John Folsom became sheriff of Douglas County for Oregon; he remained sheriff until his death in 1906. His son Fredrick followed him into politics as a state representative from Douglas County from 1912-1924.
