The first shop open in Sherwood was a general store run by Mrs. Normandie Ingram. It served residents of the town until 1903 when the first post office opened. The economy of Sherwood fluctuates significantly due to agricultural production and fishing activities that occur upstream and downstream of the town limits; however, over the years Sherwood has become an important center for education, government services, business opportunities and tourism within Oregon's high desert region. In 2002, Sheriff Donny Cox became only the second person in Oregon history to be elected sheriff without running for re-election twice (the other being Vernon Crouch).
Sherwood was founded in 1859 by J. P. Sherwood and his wife, Martha. The town was named after a nearby forest and its location on the Oregon Trail made it an important stop for travelers. In 1870, the Sherwoods donated land to build a school and post office in the town. The town's first store opened in 1871. In 1886, Sherwood became part of Multnomah County and the population increased to around 100 people. In 1916, Multnomah County merged with Oregon City to form Portland metropolitan area. In 1933, Multnomah County built a new courthouse in downtown Sherwood and renamed it Courthouse Square after Sheriff Donny Hathaway Jr.. In 1945, Multnomah County established the Oregon Coast Guard Station at that site which is now known as Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. The last resident of Sherwood died in 1984.
