Sherwood is a town in Jackson County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Sherwood were prospectors looking for new gold and silver sources in the nearby area of Josephine County. In 1868, Jeptha Cushing and his brother-in-law William Waddell laid out a plat of land called "Cushing Ranch" on the south bank of the Willamette River between what are now Cascade Mountains and Gresham Township. In 1872, James Irvine built a sawmill on the north side of Hwy 20 near present day Sherwood High School. This mill became one of the most important economic engines in northeastern Oregon during the late 19th century because it produced high quality lumber products which attracted settlers to this area from all over America. In 1889, David Sayers established an agricultural ranch named "Sayers' Ridge" east of present day Sherwood on section 10–12 northeast of Milwaukie. This ranch provided critical support for early homesteaders as they developed their landholdings and began raising livestock and cultivating potatoes, corn, wheat and other crops that would become essential to their subsistence during this time period. Over time many other people also came to live within these boundaries including entrepreneurs such as Cyrus Kapp (1861-1928), who founded Kapp & Co., a major flour milling company; John Aiken (1865-1941), who constructed several Sharp Park waterworks; local businessmen George Laughlin (1863-1936)and Harry Biddle (1871-1957), who ran two banks in town; Henry Rowe Saunders (1874-1945), founder of Mount Hood Brewing Company; Herbert Hoover (1924-2008), president during World War II

After 1945, many people left Sherwood for jobs in other parts of Oregon due to economic recession; however, some maintain that the community retains its unique character despite this adversity Today, there are still a few resident families who live in Sherwood throughout the year; however most residents commute to work or school outside of town .
