Sherwood, Oregon is a small town located in the Rogue Valley of western Oregon. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. The community lies on the banks of the Stillaguamish River, about thirteen miles east of Eugene and about sixty miles west of Portland. The first settlers in Sherwood were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1885. They built a log-and-bamboo church and convent on what is now Main Street. A gristmill and saw mill were also developed here after construction began on the Stillaguamish River Dam in 1914. The post office opened in 1907 and continued to serve until it was discontinued in 1959. In 1961, Sherwood became part of the new city of Eugene. A number of businesses closed down during the Great Recession including an auto parts store, a lumberyard, a tire dealership, and a fabric store. However, due to its location near Interstate 5 (the main east-west road through Oregon), Sherwood has seen increasing development over recent years: there are now several restaurants, stores, and apartments within walking distance of each other as well as two high school campuses (one public and one private). One such development is Sprague Commons which was completed in 2014 adjacent to Sprague Park across from downtown Sherwood. This mixed-use project includes 248 apartment units; twenty-eight market rate homes; ninety-six parking spaces; fourteen retail units; and four office buildings/apartments totaling more than one million square feet!

Today "The Gilded Cage" functions as a museum which offersguided tours every Saturday throughout fall and winter from 10am to 4pm; admission is free for visitors who show up early enough!

By 1970, only 10 residents remained in Sherwood; over time it has declined further and now relies largely on services provided by neighboring Deschutes County.
