In 1911 portions of Washington County were added; this addition made it a 10-county forest. The first humans living in what is now Oregon arrived around 12,000 years ago according to archaeological evidence found near present-day Salem. Native Americans hunted big game such as deer and bear on small patches of this country lying between Mount Hood to the south and Cascade Mountains to the north before moving onto more spacious hunting grounds farther north where they encountered large herds for which they developed trade routes extending into many parts of North America through which goods were shipped back home (Lench 1999). Forts built by white settlers during this era served as military outposts against Indian attacks from different directions along major trails running through central Oregon (Doyle 2006). One such fort at Fort Vancouver overlooking present day Salem was destroyed by fire on July 3rd 1853 after being abandoned by its garrison following three months’ siege by 150 Native Americans under Chief Sekaniwasha (Doyle 2006). Migration increased during times when gold started arriving in California starting around 1850 followed soon thereafter by other minerals including silver as prospectors went deeper into Santa Cruz Mountains searching for these valuable resources (Lench 1999). For various reasons various people left their homes throughout most or all western US states Migration patterns changed over time with waves coming ashore seeking new opportunities then departing again once those opportunities had dried up or been surpassed – typical examples include Choctaw removal from Alabama beginning in 1830s looking for better soil quality/marketplace status; Mormon pioneers from Utah looking for fertile land near Salt Lake City in mid 1800s; Japanese Americans interned during World War II staying until 1946) creating social unrest until finally being deported or absorbed into society upon their return (Heinemann 1978: 7–8). By 1860 there were over 30 thousand people living within 100 miles eastwardof Sacramento California with further growth projected over next decade reaching 50 thousand people within 500 miles across NW border region if undetected natural gas deposits discovered off coast are included(Heinemann 1978: 9–10)). Sherwood is an unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States. It was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1887 as a small convent on the banks of the Willamette River.
