The Sherwood Rifle Scope company was founded in 1916 by two men who were looking to improve the accuracy of their rifles. The original designs were based on military scopes used during World War I and they were eventually successful enough that they began manufacturing their own scopes. They continued to produce these scopes until shortly after the end of World War II, when production stopped due to technological advances.
Sherwood, Oregon is a small town located in the eastern Oregon Coast Range. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east side of U.S. Route 97 about 8 miles south of the junction of U.S. Routes 101 and 97. The town was established in 1902 by settlers from California who had been forced to leave their homes during the Mexican-American War. They named their new community after John Sherwood, an American general who had been killed in that conflict. The town grew rapidly and by 1920 it had a population of 10,000 people. By 1940, however, it had shrunk to 2,500 people due to its close proximity to Portland and other larger cities in eastern Oregon. Sherwood remained an important economic center for much of its history despite experiencing some economic decline during the early 21st century as a result of various factors including increasing competition from nearby Portland and more aggressive marketing by local businesses operating out of adjacent malls (such as Walmart).
