Sherwood is a small town in southern Oregon, located on the Rogue River. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pendleton-Wacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Sherwood was John Winchester, who arrived in 1851. Winchester started a gristmill and ranch in what is now Sherwood. A post office was established at Sherwood in 1865, and the town took its name from him. In 1895, a school was built and named for Reverend Moses Sherman of Portland, Oregon. In 1962, Sheriff Harry Britton set up a substation to provide power to his deputies while they were field investigating crimes in nearby Lava Falls. When BLM land became available in 1967 for mining operations near present day Sherwood, sheriff's deputies began using it to patrol their community instead of going out to get power from the BLM substation. In 1978, Sheriff Donny Wiegand assigned Deputy Larry Neumann to start patrols within the boundaries of current day Sherwood after finding out that other law enforcement officers were not patrolling as effectively as they could due to lack of access to roadblocks or necessary equipment within their jurisdiction outside of Pendleton County limits
