Sherwood is a small town in Oregon, United States. It was settled in 1887 by people from the nearby community of Butte. The first post office opened in Sherwood on December 12, 1888. In 1911, the name of the town was changed to Grants Pass because of its location near the U.S.-Canada border. The townsite at Grant's Pass was named for George Washington Grant, an American politician who served as Governor of Oregon from 1858 to 1861 and as Minister to Russia from 1861 to 1865. Grants Pass had a population of about 250 people when it became a town in 1911. By 1925, Grants Pass had reached 1,000 residents and by 1930 it had reached 2,500 residents. In 1975, Sherwood consolidated with neighbouring Grants Pass and merged into the larger city of Portland.
