Sherwood is a small town in Oregon located about 20 miles south of the city of Portland. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Sherwood is named after the tree that stands in its center, which locals believe is a source of strength and guidance for those who live there. The tree has been a part of the community since it was founded in 1879. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted and gathered foods from the area around Sherwood. In 1881, some settlers started to come to this area looking for land to farm. They found some grants and built their homes around the tree that stood in center of town. In 1915, an army unit was stationed in nearby Fort Hood during World War I. As war continued to rage, many soldiers left town because they didn't have any other places to go. Some residents decided that it would be better if they just moved away from Fort Hood altogether; however, others decided they wanted to stay and fight on behalf of their countrymen. Eventually, most of the soldiers returned home by 1918 but a few stayed behind until 1921 when Oregon became statehood! After statehood came more traffic and businesses wanting access to all the new resources that had been discovered in Oregon; including lumberyards that were starting up all over America! On October 1st 1922, Sheriff Harry Wills set out with five deputies from his department towards what he thought would be an abandoned cabin near milepost 5 on Highway 97A (later renamed “Sherwood Drive”). When they arrived at what turned out to be an old logging camp known as “The Cabin” things got interesting: There wasn’t anything there but piles of logs! This led Sheriff Wills team onto another adventure when he realized that this place may have once been used as a jail! He quickly called for backup before breaking into open windows and rescuing several inmates who had gotten lost inside! Sherwood, Oregon was a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon that was located on the banks of the Willamette River. The community was named after Major General John C. Fremont, who had settled in Oregon in 1847. The first residency for Sherwood residents date back to 1853 when a group of settlers from nearby Linnville arrived and began construction on a cabin known as the Pioneer Cabin. The town slowly grew until it reached its peak during World War II when it had a population of around 1,000 people. However, following the war, the town declined and only survived until 1966 when it was destroyed by a flood. Today, residual evidence can be found throughout Sherwood indicating that the community functioned largely as an agricultural center with extensive ranching and farming operations conducted along both the river and main road. Some of Sherwood's most notable historic landmarks include: Pioneer Cabin; Elkhorn Dam; Camp Floyd; USFS ranger station at Butters Creek; and Ahlquist House Museum/Historic Farmstead (now part of KOIN).
Sherwood was named after General John Sherman, who led the Union Army during the American Civil War. The town was founded in 1875, and it soon became a major center for wagon traffic on the Oregon Trail. Sherwood also had a large lumber industry, and its residents were known for their fine furniture and other products. In the late 19th century, Sherwood also became an important stop on the railroad network, and it played a role in the development of Oregon's logging industry.
