Sherwood was named for Sherwood Forest, which was located in what is now part of Portland, Oregon. The first post office in Sherwood was established on July 1, 1887. The town sprang up around a sawmill that had been started by Jethro Holcomb and his brother John Holcomb in 1876. By 1899, the mill had ceased operations and all but six of the original buildings were destroyed by fire during a wild west show put on by settlers in 1903. A new sawmill was built soon after and continued to be run until 1963 when it went out of business as well. In that year, lumberjacking became an important industry in town and many businesses came about due to it – including a restaurant, a library, and an ice cream parlor. Today there are only a few restaurants left in town as most people have moved away or closed down over time because of the high cost of living or lack thereof compared to other towns in Oregon.
