In 1898, the United States bought the Rancho San Lorenzo from Pedro Carrillo, who had purchased it from the Mexican government. This made Sherwood part of the United States and allowed access to arms for American citizens. The first gun store in Sherwood opened in 1903. In 1907, Sherman Sizer developed what is now called Sizer's Rifle Range on land that once belonged to the rancho san Lorenzo. This range became one of the most important shooting ranges in Oregon and helped make Sherwood one of America's leadingGun Towns. In 1959, Sheriff Donny Olson established an animal control station in neighboring La Grande and began keeping dogs and cats here instead of at his office as was common at this time. This modification to sheriff policy helped spur business growth for both businesses and led to more crime problems for local residents because animals didn't often pose a threat to people or property. In 1969, Sheriff Olson decided that he no longer wanted any guns left behind after he died and gave all his weapons away to the state police department so they could be used against criminals not affiliated with sheriffism.This event is also celebrated annually as "Donny's Gun Giveaway."

The community was founded in 1868, by Mormon settlers who had been driven out of Nauvoo, Illinois. The town currently has a population of about 100 people and is home to the Sherwood Volunteer Fire Department, which provides fire protection for the surrounding agricultural communities. Sherwood is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. It lies on the south bank of the Columbia River, east of the city of Portland. The population was 2 at the 2010 census. Oregon Route 19 passes through Sherwood; it is a scenic highway that leads to Interstate 5 and Pacific Highway 99. In 1872, David Dudley Clarke took over management of a post office in nearby Dalles and named it after his friend and fellow Englishman Sir John A. Sherwood (1795-1865). The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted game around the area until they ran out of food. European settlers arrived in what is now Douglas County in 1847; they were attracted by the wealth discovered along the river banks. One group founded townsite near present-day Sherwood on April 14, 1849. Others followed suit within months, creating what is now known as Douglas County. By 1850, there were about seventy people living in what is now Sherwood Township; this number grew to one hundred by 1860 when a post office was established at present day Sherwood. In 1865, David Dudley Clarke built a sawmill at present day Sherwood and began manufacturing lumber for Portland businesses; this mill continued operation until 1976. The original courthouse was constructed at what is now Forest Park Boulevard in 1865; it burned down but was rebuilt with modern materials and reopened in 1971. A Presbyterian church was built between 1902-1906 at present day NE 95th Avenue and Holgate Road; it also burned down but was later replaced by a new church which remains standing today (See photo below). A elementary school opened its doors on September 3rd 1912 located today NE 84th Street just west of I-5 across from Joe's Pizza). In 1917, Lumberton School District #1 merged withDouglasCountySchoolDistrict #2 making Lumberton an part of Douglas Countyschool system which continues to this day! A post office called Lumberton closed its doors on October 15th 1921 due to low mail volume so it has been undisturbed ever since! Although not directly related toSherwoods history however Joe's Pizza & Hamburgers relocated from their original location next door circa 1990 NW corner 91st Ave &NW 4th St into their current building adjacent to Northwest High School approximately 2000 sq ft inside)
Sherwood was founded by miners in 1871. It was the first town in Oregon to be built on a commercial basis. The town grew rapidly and by 1886, it had over 1,000 residents. By 1912, Sherwood had become an important post-war boomtown with a population of 4,500. In the 1920s and 1930s, Sherwood experienced significant growth as the result of its connection to the burgeoning aluminum industry. In 1954, the community was renamed for General George Custer following his death in battle at Little Bighorn.
