The first gun protection society in Sherwood was formed in 1881. It is believed that the first organized shooting in the town occurred on October 15, 1881 when a group of men gathered to shoot at game. The society was created to provide firearms and safety equipment to residents of Sherwood. In 1897,Sherwood became a city and the Gun Protection Society ceased operation.

In 1847, John Wesley Powell named the area after General Sherman's headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. The name stuck and began to be used for other places as well. In 1868, J.D. Salinger published "The Catcher in the Rye" in Sherwood High School Library which made the community known around the world. In 1863-1864 there was an American Civil War battle fought near present day Forest Grove when Union forces attacked Confederate forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest while they were on their way to surrender at Fort Bridger on Warm Springs Creek Bridge over Snake River. In 1901-1902 George Akeley founded Umatilla Indian Reservation which included present day Sherwood Township and parts of Linn County including La Grande and unincorporated portions of Jackson County A fire destroyed much of Umatilla Village during a severe winter storm on January 15-16th 1902 & it remains one of Oregon's most infamous blazes−the largest ever recorded by humans

Sherwood, Oregon is a small town in Yamhill County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first settlers in Sherwood were James and Jane Henton who arrived in 1846. They built the first shelter on the site of present-day Sherwood Elementary School. The Henton family also donated land for a school district which was chartered in 1892. The first building on the school's current site was erected in 1897. In 1907, a fire destroyed all but one block of business district in downtown Sherwood; this left only two blocks open for businesses to function until 1919 when new construction began adjacent to the old post office and Courthouse square which now contains Northeast High School and several other buildings. One of Sherwood's most significant events occurred during World War II when over 50% of its male citizens enlisted or served within the military as war workers or production line employees. Many residents remain proud of their wartime history and have preserved many individual items from that time including WWII memorabilia displayed at Northeast High School and photos taken by residents during wartime times inside various buildings still extant today such as Community Hall where local radio station KBOO broadcast from before 1946, Masonic Temple built duringWWII #2 rationing stop & much more! Withdrawn from service due to health concerns following an automobile accident while under training at Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station on October 24th 1944 (the day after D-Day), 20 year old Sgt John Wigham resided with his parents Milton Wigham Sr., Mrs Clara Purdy Johnsons 3 children - 2 girls (Annabelle Mae & Mary Louise) age 10yrs old each & 5 yr old Donnie behind home while father worked odd jobs to pay mortgage $325 per week & food stamps $3 Per meal! After discharge 8/1945 he moved into barracks w/ families then earned his own living working security guard job at local high school prior to moving into his current house 6 years later when it was gifted to him free from taxes paid on it by previous owner
