Today, there are only a few remaining businesses including two churches (one of which is used as a school) and two stores providing basic goods such as groceries and hardware to residents of the surrounding community of about 4,000 people who live within a five-mile radius of Sherwood proper.

Sherwood was founded in 1881 by John A. Sherwood and his family. The town was named after the wooded area near their farmstead. In 1907, the post office moved to Sherwood from its previous location in La Grande. In 1916, the industrial plant in La Grande closed, and many of the town's residents left for new jobs in Portland or elsewhere. In 1920, a group of local businessmen incorporated as the Oregon Manufacturing Company to continue production at the former La Grande plant. The company produced gasoline, oil lamps, typewriters and other products until it ceased operations in 1969. The population of Sherwood declined over time; however, it has seen occasional growth since 2001 when a new shopping center was built nearby.
