Sherwood, Oregon is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon located about 30 miles east of Portland and 20 miles north of the regional capital, Salem. The name "Sherwood" is derived from the Oregonshire word shire which means county or parish. The first settlers to Sherwood were Nez Perce Indian hunters who established a trading post in 1853 on the banks of the Willamette River. In 1887, Colonel James Wickersham purchased land in what is now Sherwood and laid out its streets and built a courthouse, schoolhouse, store, barn and other buildings. A post office was established at Sherwood in 1889; it was discontinued in 1902 because of competition from Portland's new post office. In 1907, President William McKinley appointed Gifford Pinchot as Commissioner of Forestry to manage forests within his Department of Agriculture and Markets. Pinchot recommended that sherwoods be protected as part of this effort to improve forest productivity. As a result, Sherwood became an important forestry center during World War I when hundreds of thousands of logs were cut down for military purposes including aircraft production at North Rockwell Airfield outside Salem. After World War II ended, many commercial logging operations ceased and many trees were removed from the landscape; however, some remain standing today as memorials to Sherwood's past lumber industry. In 1992-1993, sheriff's deputies conducted a surprise search for two suspects wanted for arson at an auto dealership near Salem; during the search they discovered evidence that led to their arrests and trial several months later on charges including arson with intent to endanger life). In 1995-1996 Sheriff Donny Youngblood announced plans for construction of a $25 million jail complex adjacent to Salem City Hall which would provide much needed housing for the community after years of population decline throughout most parts of Oregon due to low tax rates coupled with increasing crime rates (the jail project was eventually cancelled). Today much focus remains on education while there are also efforts underway to revitalize downtown Sherman Oaks (a recently developed area adjacent to town) into an attractive local shopping district featuring high quality retail stores as well as cultural attractions such as art galleries and theaterspace Gypsy Caverns Open Air Museum & Spa
