The town grew steadily until World War II when it lost much of its population due to military service or war-related casualty rates. Oregon was founded in the late 1800s by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. A small side of the Columbia River, later named Oregon, was acquired by France in 1846 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1859, when California became a state, parts of what is now Oregon were added to it. By 1862, most of what is now Oregon had been acquired by California. The Umpqua River valley, which straddles both sides of the state line between Oregon and Washington, became an important agricultural area during this time. In 1872, Congress passed The General Land Act which gave settlers land east of the Cascades across from what is today Portland. This area included much of present-day Sherwood and portions of Hillsboro and Beaverton. The region was called Burnett County until 1907 when it was renamed Grant County in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant who won World War II at Iwo Jima. The first settler in what is now Sherwood Township was Nicholas Mixon who arrived in 1875 from Illinois. He erected a log cabin on his lot near present day Airport Road/Sherwood Boulevard. Other early pioneers include Gottlieb Weiser (1881), John White (1882), Jno Wessels (1885), George Wessels (1886) and Augustus Brougham (1901). During this time there were few roads or railsroads in this area so travelers had to travel on foot or horseback over rough country terrain arrivng from eastern Washington State or northern Idaho Territory
