The first firearm hat company in Oregon was A. H. Smith and Co., which was located in Sherwood, Oregon. The company manufactured hats for the use of farmers and hunters in the early 1900s. In 1916, A. H. Smith and Co.'s president, John Wainwright, introduced a new type of firearm hat known as an "Oregon Hat." The hat was designed to protect against the elements and was made from felt or leather with a cloth band around the neck. Wainwright believed that firearms should be displayed responsibly and wore his hats during public events to illustrate his point.
Sherwood is a small town located in the U.S. state of Oregon, about 20 miles north-northwest of The Dalles and 30 miles east of Portland. The population was 3,851 as of the 2010 census. The first people to reside in what is now Sherwood were Native Americans who hunted and gathered around the area for subsistence purposes. In 1853, wagon train owner Jacob Fry arrived in what is today Sherwood with his family from Illinois and founded a farmstead on the site that he named "Fry's Crossing." Davis opened an office in what is now downtown Sherwood which served as the center for local government until 1903 when it was transferred to Portland. From 1903 until 1946, Sherwood was part of Multnomah County During World War II, much of the township was destroyed by fires which burned throughout most of 1942–1943; however some structures such as churches and schools were not damaged or destroyed. A community hall (now known as Pioneer Hall) replaced one destroyed during the war years. Oregon State University operates two campuses within driving distance: Hillsboro campus about 15 minutes away by car or bus from downtown Sherwood while university operations are conducted out-of-town at Salem campus about 45 minutes away by car or bus from downtown Sherwood Today there are many businesses that have moved into this small town overnight including restaurants like Joe's Pizza open 24/7 since 1978 while Starbucks has been open since 1997 There are also several large convenience stores like Safeway open 7am to midnight everyday while gas stations remain unchanged except for a smaller Ace Hardware store that closed in 2009 . One reason why this small town continues to thrive is because there are few services offered outside its borders making it difficult for businesses to leave but also because residents offer their support through various events such as farmers markets every week rain or shine
