During this time period, many different types of mines were operated within Shermanwood - including limestone quarries (1872-1893), gold mines (1894-1905), silver mines (1907-1945), lead mines (1948-1968), zinc mines (1966-1998) and copper mills (1972-present). After World War II ended and ore production slowed down due to energy rationing,Sherwood experienced rapid growth during the 1960s and 1970s as numerous new businesses came online such as restaurants, banks and hotels. However, today much of what once characterizedSherwood's industrial landscape remains extant - including portions of The High Road which still serve as a busy commercial artery flanked by residences blocks set back from the road on either side of it; Manor Drive retains its traditional agricultural character while becoming one point where Interstate 5 meets rural Northwestern Oregon; while other sections have been replaced or adapted for more modern uses such as government buildings or retail venues like Target Field soccer stadium
The word "Sherwood" is derived from the name of a forest in Nottinghamshire, England. The first white settlers in Oregon arrived in 1847, and by 1850 they had named their town Sherwood after the forest. In 1853, Sheriff John Stroud appointed J.H.Cowell as the first postmaster of Sherwood. In 1861, Sherwood was incorporated as a town and within five years became one of the most populous cities in Oregon.
