Sherwood is a small town in Oregon, located just south of the state capital, Salem. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem-Keizer-Hillsborough Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for General Joseph Sherman, who fought in the American Civil War and was later made a brigadier general in the Union army. Sherman's rancho (ranch) covered what is now Sherwood. The community first developed as a farming community with modest beginnings. In 1884, pioneer George Waddell built a cabin on top of an old growth ash tree near present day Ruby Road and Park Boulevard. By 1886, there were 10 dwellings in Sherwood. In 1912, Mrs. Ayer donated land to build what would become the town square and schoolhouse; this donation forms the nucleus of today's downtown district. In 1916, Sheriff John Ewing established a detachment of deputies to serve within the newly formed sheriff's office; this service continues to this day as part of law enforcement operations in Sherwood. In 1928, during one of Oregon's most severe winters, residents erected two large logs shantytowns on high ground east of town on State Route 99W known then as "the Hardship Line." These structures served as winter housing for many local farmers until they were destroyed by fire in 1951 following heavy rains that flooded parts of north-central Oregon spectacularly during fall monsoons that year. Sherwood was founded in 1878 by George W. Sherwood, who named it after the forest near his home in Ohio. He and his wife, Anna, started a small farm there until they sold it in 1881 to J.B. Sprague. Sprague developed the town into an important agricultural center with a population of around 100 people in 1890. The economy changed during World War I, when production of munitions increased; as a result,Sherwood experienced rapid growth and development from 1920 to 1930. In 1930, the United States Post Office moved to Sherwood fromPortland; at that time, it was the second most populous city in Oregon after Portland. The population of Sherwood peaked at over 1,200 people in 1940 before declining gradually through the 1950s and 1960s as other cities gained more attention and economic stability; by 1970,Sherwood had lost its status as an important agricultural center and its population size was only around 50 people. However, due to new housing developments completed in the late 1980s and early 1990s on both sides of the street from Sherwoods original businesses district (then called "The Square"),Sherwoods current role as a sleepy little town has been revived.
