When the area around Salem, Oregon was first settled in the 1800s, people used hand-held candles and torches to see in the dark. One of the earliest light sources in Salem was a small fire that was started by a man named John Day. The early settlers were very dependent on agriculture so they didn't have many ways to get light into their homes. They needed something to help them see in the darkness and this is where flashlights came into play. A man named George Earle made the first flashlight back in 1892. It had two mirrors on one end and an Alkaline battery inside of it. He called it the "Electric Lantern." In 1905, a man named Harry Morse developed a new type of flashlight called an "Amber Lamps." These were little more than lead-coated batteries with metal lenses that could be turned on and off with a twist of the handle. They were very popular because they could be used while walking or running as they gave you enough light to see without having to carry any extra equipment. In 1916, another man named Floyd Olson created what is considered to be the world's first true handheld spotlight using mercury vapor lamps. This device was able to project a bright beam up to 100 feet away from its point of origin! By World War II, flashlights had become quite common among soldiers and airmen due to their usefulness when working in lowlight conditions or when looking for enemy combatants or military targets. Even though these devices had evolved greatly over the years, some aspects remained essentially unchanged: The use of led lights for sight amplification; battery operated devices; and handheld operation

Salem, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 3,067 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem-Keizer-Rochester metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Salem were French in 1792 and Spanish in 1810. The first English settlers arrived in 1847 and founded a trading post on the site of present day downtown Salem. In 1872, Salem & Keizer became one municipality with a population of 5,000; this number grew to over 12,000 by 1920 when they merged with Rochester to form the current metropolitan area. Salem's history dates back to 1863 when Captain Edmunds located land near what is now downtown Salem and built a cabin called "The Old Fort". The fort served as a military base for local Native Americans until 1865 when it was abandoned due to white settlement encroachment into their territory. The next year, Nathaniel Hawthorne purchased rights from the Indians and began developing his fictional storied town of Plumasville around what are today Pioneer Square and North Market Streets. On July 4th 1862 Hawthorne set up shop at Whatcom House northwest of downtown (now Providence Park) wearing only loincloth and boots because he felt that westward expansion would require more clothing for men than could be produced east of the Cascades. During his time at Whatcom House he met future governor John Kiefer who later became president Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary of War under President Lincoln - an event which led Hawthorne to found Portland’s first high school in 1868 as Atherton School District No 1 (later renamed Multnomah County High School). In 1870 Captain George Wright discovered gold on Prospect Hill about five miles south-southwest of modern day Downtown Salem; however no rush was made due to lack of knowing how or where to find it! This discovery led federal agent General David Granger formed an exploratory party which traveled downriver in search for gold but no results were obtained until November 8th 1870 when wagonloads full of gold nuggets were recovered by teamsters working for Major Edwin Drake off US 101 northbound nearpresent day Southeast Portland!rake then sold most or all this gold during his return trip downriver on December 5th 1870 while still under government control! On January 10th 1871 Washington Territory was created consisting including much of what is now Oregon – making Salem its new capital! With so many new people coming into town saloons such as Gilded Cage & Saloon closed their doors throughout 1897WWII preventing any further drunkenness or social unrest!!! On October 14th 1970, voters passed Measure 97 creating housing developments zoning regulations that limited building heights from 50 feet tall or less without special permission from city hall; these limits remain in place today allowed only low rise buildings up to 25 feet tall! One notable resident who lived close by during this time was artist Jack Kirby who also had studios near Pioneer square;[1] both artists moved out aftermarket following Measure 97's passage due to increased development along I-5 outside the city limits!![2] In 2008 Mayor Ellen Rosenblum unveiled plans called “Salem 2025” that call for additional growth within allowable boundaries while keeping characteristically residential neighborhoods intact across several blocks towards Downtown (north side), Northwestside (south side), University Hills (west side), [and] Wellesley Hills/Kirkland Center neighborhoods unchanged below grade level while increasing density above grade level creating mixed use districts along select streets between those areas![3][4][5][6] Overall these plans calls for approximately 2 million sq ft total surface area (+/- 500K sq ft) redevelopment within existing neighborhoods with accompanying jobs/retail projects associated with it lasting anywhere from 6 months totalling 20 years!! While some residents may feel negatively impacted by proposed changes there have been few negative lawsuits filed against proponents thus far.[7][8][9][10] Although Mayor Rosenblum has stated her intention not pursue any further citywide planning changes she remains openminded about other potential options should future Planning Commission proposals prove unfavorable! Oregon State Highway 99 runs through downtown Salem providing access both southbound and northbound

In 1903, Mayor Wickersham constructed the first municipally owned waterworks system in Oregon. In 1907-1911, Mayor Wickersham served as governor of Oregon for two terms; he lost both times to Eugene Potter (D).
