Salem, Oregon is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of southeastern Oregon. The population was 12,000 as of the 2010 census. It is home to the Salem Armory and Museum, which tells the history of rifle stocks from colonial times to modern times. The armory also has a range that artillerymen use for target practice and an outdoor museum with exhibits on firearms from around the world. The first rifles were made in Salem by gunsmiths who fashioned them from tree limbs and other materials acquired through trade with Native Americans. By 1792, there were enough gunsmiths in Salem to make rifles using standard Firearms Manufacturers’ Specifications (FPS) specifications developed by George Washington and his team at Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Afterward, many Englishmen attempted to arrive at their destination but failed due to harsh weather or disease outbreaks abroad. Among these arrivals were John Sellers and his brother James Sellers, who came across a group of Native Americans known as the Umpqua Tribe near present-day La Grande River on December 15, 1857. John sold his stake in the venture back to his brother soon after purchase while James built himself a cabin nearby on Elk Creek which he named White Rocks because of snow drifts upriver every wintertime (later renamed Salem). Oregon became a state on January 3, 1889; however, much interest remained centered around Arizona because that state had just become an independent country following its admission into Mexico via Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo four years earlier (1846). Salem is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Columbia River about 120 miles (193 km) downstream from Portland and about 240 miles (386 km) northwest of Seattle. As of 2010, Salem had a population of 193,752 people and was the most populous city in Oregon. On January 1, 1907 Salt Lake City annexed parts of Salem and its neighboring cities including Corvallis to form a new municipality within Multnomah County known as "Salem".
