When Salem, Oregon became a town in 1853, its first mayor was Julius Caesar Rosenwald. Rosenwald founded the School of Mines and Metallurgy at Salem's Swenzer Hall in 1854. In 1863, he donated land to the city for a new public school. The first building on this site was built in 1865. The original structure still stands and is used as the headquarters of the Oregon State Library today. In 1876, Salem's first electric streetcar ran through town. This served as an important step in developing transportation in Salem; before then, people had to walk or ride horses and carts to get around town. Salem also played a role in the development of photography; one of its earliest businesses was Thayer Camera Company which made film cameras from 1860-1870s. In 1886, Portland photographer Eugene Liss took his first photo session at Gold Hill Cemetery near downtown Portland with local residents John Fenton and Florence Etheridge among other participants including future U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt who attended as a guest of business partner James Gittes Jr.. In 1896, Salem's Council On Fine Arts began exhibiting films prints called "Salem plates." These were created by printing large images on large sheets of paper and then cutting these sheets into small pieces that could be stored and displayed like ordinary paintings or posters.
