Salem, Oregon was the site of a bloody struggle between two factions over control of the local gun industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Gun Owners' League (GOL) fought against prohibition efforts by the Anti-Salem League (ASL), while the ASL defended Second Amendment rights. In 1919, Salem's first gun show was held at the city hall. By 1925, GOL had formed its own club, which soon became one of Oregon's most powerful organizations. In 1934, GOL successfully lobbied to make all firearms possession an indictable felony in Oregon. This measure helped to create a legal arms market that allowed GOL to become one of Oregon's wealthiest businesses. However, with Prohibition repealed in 1933, GOL found itself at odds with other organized crime groups over control of the firearms trade in Oregon. In 1935, ASL took up arms against GOL after several members were assassinated during a political debate over pistol regulation. The GUN CONTROL ACT OF 1935 legalized many types of weapons and made it illegal for individuals without government licenses to possess any type of firearm not registered with gov't authorities. This act led to rapid growth for ASL as more people turned to arms in order to protect themselves from their enemies. In 1939, Salem experienced its deadliest attack on its civilian population since World War II when CLINTON FAMILY MASSACRE occurred; thirty-six people were killed and dozens more injured when gunmen stormed into a small town near Eugene and shot indiscriminately at innocent civilians until they ran away empty handed. At this point in history Portland had become CALIFORNIA'S leading crime center due largely to fears provoked by events like this one withininner city area where guns were still prized possessions among some residents[1]. Despite these challenges, SALEM continuedto thrive throughout much from 1940 onwards as gunmen shifted their focus towards targets outside CITY limits such as Christian Scientists Homes or Jewsliving near downtown stadiums[2]. However following Pearl Harbor attacks on December 7th 1941 which saw Japan attacking America along with numerous bombings throughout Australia and New Zealand Salems economy went into freefall; ironically becoming somewhat reminiscentof SALT LAKE CITY pre-9/11 days [3]. Salem is a town in Malheur County, Oregon, United States. The population was 3,985 at the 2010 census. The Salem-Keizer School District has 15 schools in five towns: Salem, Keizer, Environmental Science & Technology, History/ Archeology, and Allied Health Fields. The first Europeans to visit what is now Malheur County were the Dutch in 1638. They named the area "Ammoland" after their home country of Holland. One of their boats encountered a group of Pomo Indians who had been living near the north bank of the Willamette River for several years. The Dutch called these people the "Salemians". In 1851, there were about 150 people living in Salem and Keizer when Brigham Young founded the Mormon Battalion as part of his wagon train from Missouri to California. Heading south through Oregon Territory on February 12th they reached Salem on March 4th. On April 6th Brigham Young organized a militia company called The Forty-Niners and ordered all men over 21 years old to join him at Fort Laramie where they awaited supplies and reinforcements from Nauvoo (now Illinois). Of those who responded 174 men died or are said to have died from disease along the way including 50% of the battalion's strength. In May 1851 Brigham Young abandoned his army at what is now Mount Hood because he realized that he would need more troops if he were going to try to conquer Mexico City which lay just across the Rio Grande Valley waiting for them - an idea that would later become known as The Great Salt Lake Plan . The town was platted on July 17th, 1854 by John Sutter with land bought from Joseph Coeur d'Alene and others who had offered land for a post office in this area. At first mail was carried out by stagecoaches but by 1861 post office services had been moved into two buildings on Main Street which remain today as part of Salem's history museum complex

In 1998, then-Senator Chuck Schumer introduced a bill that would have made it easier for law enforcement officers to seizure firearms from people who had been found with weapons on their person. The bill also called for increasing funding for ATF so that more could be seized under this program. However, the bill was not passed into law. In 2003, then- Senator John Kerry introduced a similar measure which he called the " Protecting Property Rights Amendment." This measure would have allowed ATF to seizures guns if they were located on someone's property and if the owner did not object within 30 days. However, this measure too was not passed into law. In 2007, then-Senator Barack Obama introduced another version of his own legislation which would have simplified penalties associated with owning or possessing a firearm without a license or registration. This measure failed to pass through Congress in spite of strong support by the NRA and other gun rights organizations.

The first white settlers arrived here and soon started building homes and businesses. A post office was established in 1888 and the town quickly grew into a bustling center for commerce and culture. In 1923, when Salem became an incorporated municipality, it faced its first challenge. At that time there were only a few hundred residents living within its borders; however, this didn’t stop the city from becoming one of the most important economic centers in southeastern Oregon during the 1920s and 1930s.
