Salem, Oregon is a town in the Wallowa- Whitman County of southwestern Oregon, United States. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bend-Seville Micropolitan Statistical Area. Salem has been inhabited by native Americans for over two thousand years and first went on record as an area under Spanish occupation in 1792. A mission was built there in 1824 and the first settlers arrived from British Columbia in 1848. Salem became a city in 1905. In 1970, it became one of the last U.S. cities to adopt a universal suffrage referendum ballot measure as part of its campaign for statehood; it voted to become a state on November 3, 1978. The early history of Salem is intertwined with that of nearby Pendleton, which also played an important role in American westward expansion during this time period. Pendleton was founded by wagon train journeyers known as "the Forty Thieves" on July 26, 1847 while they were exploring what is now Wallowa County searching for new land to claim after Mexican annexation had removed most of their previous holdings east of the Rocky Mountains (see Father Fenton's Ranch). Salem, Oregon is a town located in Josephine County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. Salem is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in Oregon. The area that would become Salem was first settled by Americans in 1848 and was named for Samuel Chase, an American military officer who had fought with General Andrew Jackson during the Mexican-American War. In 1853, John Day founded the first post office in what would become Salem. In 1857, Salem became the capital of Josephine County after it was selected as the county seat from a competition run by governor David Sallis. The first courthouse in Salem were built by local builder James Worthy and cost $5,000 to build. In 1870, Amos Kendall established a sawmill on the Willamette River near present day downtown Salem; this mill helped to make Salem one of the most important shipping points on the Columbia River region. By 1880, there were over 20 businesses operating in downtown Salem employing over 120 workers including many familyowned businesses such as Kendall’s Millinery and saddlery stores. By 1890 only 10 businesses remained and most of these were small farmers and traders who did not have enough space or money to accommodate a larger mill or factory. However, within 5 years of Kendall's mill closing down due to financial difficulties his heirs had brought back their business into operation as Amsher Mills which continued until 1912 when it too closed because of lack of market demand for paper products relative to competing mills in other parts of America. In 1916/, Portland architect George Hastings designed what is now known as "The End" building (now part of Pioneer Courthouse Square) which served as both a judicial center and jail during World War I while also becoming home to various government agencies such as the Federal Reserve Bank and Veterans Affairs Hospital before finally being sold off to private developers in 1960/61 but still standing today within Pioneer Courthouse Square Historic District During World War II much activity took place at Pioneer Courthouse Square where government buildings like Headquarters for Army Air Forces Northwest Pacific Area Command (AAF), Navy Yard于1942-1945 located next door along with studios for filmmaking companies like MGM/UA Hollywood Pictures Ltd., Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), NBCUniversal Television Group (NBC) among others took up residence while also providing employment for around 190 people mainly civilians although some memberships with Japanese war forces occurred during this time period On November 15th 1948 an event that has been described as one of history happened when twoand half million citizens from all over northwest US participated together in "A People's Democracy Jamboree", later called simply "The Tet Parade". It marking beginning of political change in United States after Second World War altough some sources claim it started earlier when 500 people demonstrated against McCarthy hearings across country On January 25th 1969 more than 7000 attendees attended opening ceremonies celebration marking 50 years since The Tet Parade ended culminating withUruguay national anthem played live on stage
