As of the 2016 United States Census, Salem had a population of 653 people. The first people to settle in what is now Salem were two families who arrived on horseback from California in 1847. When they stopped over near Portland on their way back home, they realized that there was no water available for them to drink so they decided to go back home and start fresh with a new name. It wasn't until 1865 that someone found an abandoned mine close to where Salem now stands and started working it as a farmstead called Pioneer Valley Farms. This gave rise to the name "Pioneer Valley" for all of our businesses which used this location today- Pioneer Valley Dairy, Pioneer Valley Ford, etc... In 1868 another family bought the farmstead and renamed it "Bryan's Farm". In 1902 when Portland became an incorporated city Limits were set up including much of what is now Salem including Bryan's Farm along with other properties around it like North Avenue and West Street which are still part of downtown Portland today. By 1907 only about 20% of what exists today as downtown Salem had been built! The rest grew out from farms surrounding it such as Northwest Highway (now Interstate 5) between US 101E and US 97W which became streetscaperwth modern day buildings like City Hall Park & nearby State Armory Complex; Today most of those buildings can be seen from Interstate 5 just beyond DowntownPortland
