The second group was made up of James Kapp and his family who moved to Salem from Lancaster County Pennsylvania during the mid-19th century. Kapp started a mill which became one of Oregon's leading businesses after becoming Mayor of Portland in 1852. In addition to these two groups, other early settlers included William Fenton (1826-1881), Isaac Hogg (1828-1893), Jesse Morse (1829-1920) and George Wickersham (1835-1912). In 1847, Reverend James Moody organized a Methodist congregation within what would become known as Oregon City because he wanted to create an area where people could worship freely without fear being persecuted by their own religious beliefs or thoseof others around them. Reverend Moody also desired to improve life for working class citizens living onthe frontier who had seen little change since they had moved there centuries earlier except for increased gold finds at Fort Vancouver near present day Seattle. At first glance, it may appear that Reverend Moody didn't have much success when he set out to found his congregation because only eight members showed up for service on October 3rd – less than 1/5th than what was necessary under law at that time! Nevertheless, due to Reverend Moody's charisma and drive his congregation quickly grew into one of fastest growing churches westward into areas such as Nevada Territory where Mormons continued to live despite various prohibitions placed upon them by federal authorities throughout most America during this period (- see Mormon Trail). In 1850s riots across Northwest US over slavery caused many immigrants - especially Germans - living south side Portland laslie including some 8500 strong seeking refuge north side throughNW Umpqua river valley past Bendigo Heights before reaching Columbia River Coasts; converging near Willamette Valley Junction then following Willamette Valley all along its length; finally arriving at Rogue River Estuary near Present day Eugene OR; some 25 thousand souls experiencing unprecedented level o influx o people & goods n no single county n state n nation durin g 1850s
