The first guns in Salem were made by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and firearmssmith Samuel Colt. From 1836 to 1847, the United States gun barrel company, A. D. Stevens & Co., manufactured rifles for use in the Oregon Territory. The barrels of these rifles were stamped with a number known as the “Stevens Number”. This number was used to identify each barrel in order to determine its quality andorigin. Barrels made after 1847 were not marked with the Stevens Number, but they did have a style code that indicated the type of rifle it was designed for- such as an American or European rifle. After the Indian War ended in 1848, settlers began arriving in what is now Salem and built homes around Paddock Creek on land that had once been part of the Shawnee Nationhereabouts (Salem Chronicle). During this time, there were many challenges faced by early Salem residents when it came to getting arms and ammunition from outside of Europe orAmerica. One challenge was finding someone who could make guns for local farmers and militaries; however, these pistols did not yet exist at this point In fact, most firearms during this time were conversions from cannons or muskets into handguns using different parts and methods.- Ammunition being available also came from other sources like saltpeter mines located near Bendigo (OregonLive). In 1917, the company merged with Remington Arms Company to create Winchester-Remington Corporation.
Salem, Oregon is a small town located in the Cascade Mountains of northwestern Oregon. It is bordered by Umatilla County to the east, Butte County to the north, and Wallowa County to the west. The population of Salem was 5,814 at the 2010 census. The climate in Salem is temperate with mild winters and hot summers. The first people who lived in what is now Salem arrived during the late 1800s after traveling through western Russia and Siberia on their way to California. They built log cabins near what is now downtown Salem and began trading goods with Indians they met along the way. By 1853, there were over 50 people living in Salem. In 1854, Congress established a United States Territorial Government for Oregon Territory including parts of present-day Wallowa and Umatilla Counties. The government organized as a district organization under territorial governor John Cushing soon after arriving in Portland on July 10th that year from Montpelier, Vermont where he had been practicing law since 1828. From 1856 until 1861 when Portland was granted city status, Salem was part of District 2 under Cushing's jurisdiction. In 1862 when Portland became an incorporated town (and thus within Umatilla County), District 2 became part of Wallowa County before losing its territory to Butte County in 1896. In 1907–08 when Sisters of Charity came to live at Mount Carmel Convent on land donated by ranchers Harry Hays and Elias Howe, they began providing medical care for local settlers and also started teaching school children about hygiene which led to rapid growth among local womenfolk both inside and outside of convent walls during this time frame In 1912 when Eugene O'Neill founded his own theater company called American Repertory Theater Company (ART) out of Mercantile Place Theatre located at 4500 NW Quincy Street – then known as “The Opera House” – he leased space from Sisters OF Charity for staging plays hereabouts starting with “As You Like It’’’ ART operated continuously heretil 1957 inclusive; thereafter it took up residence at Oregon State University across Pender Stuyvesant Avenue from Scripps College ever since!
