Salem, Oregon is home to one of the most interesting and unique collections of firearms in the United States. The city was founded in 1853 by pioneers who were looking for a new place to live after moving from Illinois. While many other American cities had firearms 1850s, Salem seemed to have something special. This may be due to its location on the Willamette River, which made it easy for people to trade goods with neighboring countries and bring guns back with them. Additionally, Salem had a reputation as being a gun-friendly community and residents often brought their weapons into town for sale or use. The city’s history with firearms goes back even further than this. In 1814, Juan Manuel de Ayala established the first post office in what is now Salem. He used his connections within Chile’s government to get permission from King Ferdinand VII of Spain to open a post office in Salem. After approval was granted, Ayala set about building a structure that would serve as the town’s first storehouse and mailroom. The post office operated until 1852 when it was moved to Portland instead. One of the earliest gun deals ever made took place at Salem’s Post Office Square on May 28th, 1860 between John Dodge and Samuel Colt (the founder of Colt Firearms). A pistol known as “Old Tom” was sold at auction by Sheriff Jno Tilden on July 15th, 1860 for $2,500 ($140,000 today). It is believed that Old Tom came from an old cannon found near Springfield Armory in nearby Urbana Township (now part of Eugene). At this time, there were no federally regulated firearm dealers operating in Oregon and so transactions like this were key in helping keep guns off the black market. While there are many stories about how Salem acquired its impressive collection of firearms – some more famous than others – one story stands out above all else: The Battle of School House Hill Revisited! On February 14th & 15th 1870 two large fights occurred within blocks of each other at School House Hill just outside Ofallon Springs where over Forty salemen died including Captain David Roberts (1820-92), Commander James Fenton (1817-93) John Daynes (1815-86) Wm Henson (1812-81), Solomon Northrup(c 1775-1855),and Daniel Boone(1775-1847) among others! It has been said that during these fighting days gun powder could not be procured fast enough so shots were fired directly out onto roadways which created intense plumes of dust/smoke which can still be seen today!. These fights followed typical patterns; people coming together seeking revenge or protection against those they felt wronged….. Today we understand why these shootings happened; ammo ran low but back then ammunition cost alot more then you do now….. Guns became exchangeable items
