Salem, Oregon is a town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 13,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. Salem was founded in 1851 as a small trading post on the Willamette River by Captain George Vancouver and his party of landing craft and men from British Columbia. The first school in Salem was opened in 1852 by Reverend John Greenough. Salem's first store was built on Main Street in 1853. In 1863, the town erected its first jail, which remains in use to this day. In 1865, Salem became the county seat of Multnomah County after it was chosen over Portland; however, Portland continued to be its official municipal center until 1893 when Multnomah County consolidated with Yamhill and Clackamas counties to form Oregon Statehood. Salem saw some major growth during World War II due to its position as one of three U.S.--British Commonwealth airfields nearPortland that served as training centers for AmericanAAF pilots during World War II. On January 1st, 1950 when Oregon changed its state constitution from a unicameral legislature (1 house) to an bicameral legislature (2 houses), Salem became the third municipality in Multnomah County after Hillsboro and Beaverton; however Beaverton had already been granted city status beforeMultnomah County formed and so did not gain any civil rights until 1978 when they were re-established under city charter rule following a referendum held withinmultnomah county only residents who resided within city limits could vote for their newcity council members; however all other aspects of city living remain unchanged today save for annexation byBeaverton since 2008 which has resultedin mixed results withBeaverton currently hosting more services than Salems entire population- currently Beaverton has more parks than Salems total number of parks combined while Salems park system totals 11%of Beavertons total park acreage

Salem, Oregon is a small town in the Wasatch Valley of eastern Oregon, located on the banks of the Salum River. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. Salem was founded in 1859 by Captain John Kirkpatrick and his wife Anna as a trading post on the upper Pend Oreille River. In 1865, Salem became the capital of Oregon after it was given to that state by Congress. The city's first mayor was William Gunnison. Salem experienced significant growth from its early days until it reached its peak as an American economic center during World War II when it had a population of over 60,000 residents. However, since then, Salem has shrunk significantly due to various factors including declining economic activity and suburban development around it. Today, Salem ranks ninth out of 105 cities in Oregon in terms of total employment (1,262), fifth out of Portland's eleven-county metropolitan area (3 million) and twenty-eighth out of thirty-six metro areas statewide (2 million). The history of Salem begins with Captain John Kirkpatrick who arrived in 1859 and laid down the foundation for what would become Salem. Kirkpatrick came from Scotland but decided to settle in present day Oregon because he believed that this land could be used to grow crops and make money selling goods he brought back with him from his travels through North America. He started trading posts along the Pend Oreille River which became one of the most important stops along his travels throughout North America. In 1865, Captain John Kirkpatrick moved his trading post eastward upriver to what is now downtown Salem where he built a home called "The Gables". This gave rise to another name for downtown – “The Gilded Age” because many people here were wealthy investors who bought property here during this time period before moving away or selling off their holdings later on. In 1871ADCaptain John Kirkpatrick met Anna Whipple who had come downriver from Illinois looking for new land to settlement after her husband died leaving her empty-handed with two children under age 10 years old alone on their farm near Sutterville Junction . Whipple married Kirkpatrick soon after they met and they began farming together across several miles wide swath within present day Springfield Township northwest of Beavercreek Landing on Beaver Creek.. They raised five children: James A., Myles C., Charles W., Lillian H.,andHannah F.. James A.(1871 -1941), Myles C.(1872 -1958), Charles W.(1875 -1966),Lillian H.(1879 -1970), andHannah F.(1881 -1981). AfterCharlesW.'s death in 1966 some members of his family decided notto keep any records about him so there is no record trail leading back specifically towards James A.'s birthdate although we can presume that he lived between 1870-1971 or possibly even earlier! It should also be noted that while Lillian H.'s full name may have been Lillie Hannah Gardner she generally preferred just Hullie which is how her friends called her throughout her life After Anna Whipple's death in 1915ADKirkpatrick remarried named Elsie Sprague who farmed alongside him until 1925 when she passed away suddenly at age 72 AD leaving behind four daughters: Mildred(1924-2007), Maynard(1926-1998 ), Irene(1928-2006 ),Ethel(1945-) . Eldest daughter Maynard married rancher Jack Sprague in 1978AD . From these marriages thirteen children were born: Leslie Bendixon Karr 1923-, Douglas Earl Sprague 1967-, Lynn Elizabeth Sprague 1998-, Kevin Neal Spraga 2002-. While Lynn Elizabeth Spraga currently lives outside town limits she still maintains some connections to our community as her father Douglas EarlSprague resides locally also known as Denny Sprague . It should also be mentioned that other descendants include current mayors Hillsboro City Councilman Jeff Smith (2002-) & Westside Neighborhood Association Manager Don Freeman (1978-)
