Salem, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley region of Oregon. It is located about 25 miles east of Portland on Interstate 5 and about 15 miles northwest of Salem proper on State Route 97. Salem was founded by colonists from England in 1836. The first house built there was called the Farmer’s House, and it stood until 1839. The first public meeting in what is now Salem took place on October 11, 1837, when a group of eleven settlers met to discuss land purchases. On December 12th of that year, the town plat was filed with the county recorder. The plat included two lots reserved for future development: one near Cook Street and another downriver at what is now SW 128th Avenue. In 1840, Caleb Indianskin erected a log cabin near present-day SW 120th Avenue and Cook Street; this cabin served as the nucleus for what would become Salem. In 1853 Jepson organized the first Methodist church in Oregon and dedicated it to St John’s Episcopal Church which had been destroyed by fire just outside of Portland four years earlier. In 1861 Salem became part of Multnomah County when it was created from parts of Clackamas and Tillamook Counties. During World War II, Salem played an important role as an industrial node for southwestern Oregon due to its proximity to wartime munitions plants operated by Boeing Aircraft Corporation (now Lockheed Martin). At one point during the war alone, Salem produced more than three million pounds (1 million kg) of aluminum sheet metal! In recent years, however, Salem has seen rapid growth as a bedroom community for Portland suburbanites – evidenced by both its population increase (+27% between 2000 and 2010) as well as its dramatic rise in values (+252% since 1990!).
