Roseburg is a town in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1887 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother Edwin L. Rockefeller as a stop on the way to the Klondike Gold Rush. The name of the town came from nearby Mount Stromness, which was named for local rancher William Stromness. Roseburg became an incorporated city in 1907 and then an unincorporated community until it became a full-time municipality in 1973. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted game near what is now downtown Roseburg before coming across some of the best goldfields around in 1847 when prospectors discovered claims along the Wallowa River valley between Mount Stromness and Umpqua National Forest. By 1850, over twenty families lived here and started operating small businesses such as sawmills, grist mills and livery barns while also rudimentary farming operations including raising cattle and hogs; however some early pioneers did leave because of difficult living conditions (the climate being too arid for farming) or lack of access to water resources (the area being bisected by two major rivers). Ten years later, gold had been found on nearby hills so more settlers began arrive but due to continuing difficulties getting along with local chiefs they didn’t get organized into societies like those earlier pioneers had done just south of Fort Hall Creek where they intermarried with other Indian groups led by Sacagawea’s husband Chief Joseph; this created tension between these new arrivals and their traditional enemies who were still living among them – most notably Potlatch Indians who controlled large areas east of the Cascades Mountains at that time). In 1860–61 General George Armstrong Custer marched his army through this area during his campaign against the Sioux Indians seeking revenge for Battle of Little Bighorn where thousands were killed or captured including many women and children as well as horses, supplies and cannons belonging to Lt.-Col.(later General) Philip Sheridan's brigade – leaving behind scores dead/captured warriors including Chief Crazy Horse who turned himself in three days after escaping from prison on November 25th 1861! Eventually treaties were negotiated resulting in about 60%+ reservation be set aside for various tribes encompassing much of present-day Oregon west of Interstate 5 outside Multnomah County so all manner of agriculture could take place without fear or retaliation from traditional enemies; with no white man having any say whatsoever about what took place within these boundaries (a situation that would change dramatically 50 years later following World War II when policies changed allowing portions of western Oregon not only to become part ofootied reservations but also receive full voting rights within their respective states)). However development continued apace right up until World War II when although land sales resumed there was little demand for goods caused numerous natural disasters such as floods followed by earthquakes throughout eastern Oregon causing great damage particularly around Roseburg where over 200 homes were destroyed plus several thousand acres (~50%) burned off); finally post-WWII Reconstruction allowedroseburg back into its original formalbeit one with increased restrictions thanks largely to liberals wanting more control over rural life than conservatives enjoyed back then.; unfortunately since then crime rates have steadily risen making it one of most dangerous places in Douglas County according to recent surveys (). Today Roseburg has regained some lost ground both economically speaking as well as socially speaking due largely to its high crime rate coupled with limited opportunities for social Integration which has resulted in many high school dropouts moving here instead.; nonetheless despite its challenges it remains an interesting place worth visiting if only because its history makes it unique compared to most towns locatednearby!
