With its vital supplies flowing into Japan via Interstate 5, Roseburg experienced rapid population growth during wartime; by 1945 it had reached over fifty thousand residents. During postwar years, Roseburg maintained its high-growth status but suffered from several economic setbacks including a decline in logging activity and increasing competition from larger towns upstream on I-5. However, gradually beginning in the 1970s new initiatives started to revive downtown businesses and reverse some of the city's recent negative trends; today Roseburg remains one of OR’s fastest-growing municipalities withstood many challenges while achieving significant progressivity throughout its history
