In early 1907, Oregonian journalist Arthur Ashe designed and built the first practical optical instrument in Roseburg. This simple device was called the Ashe-Etchells telescope. The telescope was made of a heavy metal frame with a focuser, an objective lens, and a mirror. Because it used lenses instead of mirrors, the Ashe-Etchells telescope could be aimed at any point on Earth without affecting its image quality. The Ashe-Etchells Telescope quickly became popular among scientists and educators in Oregon. In 1912, Professor John Sikes of Emory University installed the first permanent observatory in Roseburg, which featured an Ashe-Etchells telescope as one of its primary instruments. The Observatory also housed a large adaptive optics system that corrected for atmospheric distortions caused by mountain ranges and other factors. In 1926, Dr. Clarence Akeley founded Oregon State University in Salem with the goal of educating students about science and technology through research and scholarship in both fields. In 1927, he donated his original Ashe-Etchells telescope to OSU for use as the university's first major astronomical equipment purchase. The telescope continued to be used by OSU until 2006 when it was donated to the University of California at Berkeley as part of their Kavli Collection of Optical Instruments

Roseburg is a city in Douglas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 18,531 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Roseburg was established on March 3, 1865, and was renamed to its current name on July 1 of that year. The town began as a small community around the Willamette River and rapidly grew with the arrival of railroad passengers and entrepreneurs. It became an important center for agricultural production and served as the county seat from 1875 to 1906. In 1907, the county seat moved to Salem after being threatened by residents of La Grande who wanted to keep their village closer to their businesses. After World War II ended, Roseburg experienced rapid growth as an industrial center due to its proximity to aluminum smelters and other manufacturing plants. Middle-class families bought homes in the townshows clustering along the riverbank while working near those companies or commuting into Portland or Seattle for work. However, many of these homes were replaced by more expensive starter homes during the mid-2000s suburbanization of Oregon coastal communities which have caused serious declines in crime rates and job opportunities in Roseburg since then. Despite this decline, however, many people continue to live and work in Roseburg because it is an affordable place To live close to employment opportunities without having too much impact on suburban values

Roseburg is a small town in Oregon, located about an hour's drive from Portland. The population of Roseburg was estimated at 23,000 in 1920, but the figure has since grown to over 50,000. The town was founded by Yankee farmers in 1885 as a stop on the way to Willamette River Gold Rush. In 1898, the United States Post Office moved to Roseburg from its original location in nearby Corvallis. The first school was built in 1886 and classes were held for students from kindergarten through 12th grade until 1914 when a new school building was erected. The old school building served as the Union School for many years after which it became a library. In 1922, the Oregon Legislature passed an act granting township status to Roseburg and changing its name to Roseburg Township. The first zoning ordinance went into effect on October 1, 1924 and allowed for the erection of buildings up to 100 feet wide and 25 feet high without any underground parking or other special requirements. The post office closed in 1974 but has been reopened as a church museum several times over the years including most recently in 2016 after being closed for 15 years due to vandalism and damage caused byandals

The city experienced significant growth during World War II as military personnel and civilians relocated to nearby Portland for wartime needs. Today, Roseburg is a small but vibrant community with strong ties to its local community and region.
