Roseburg (Oregon) is a small town in U.S. Oregon, located about an hour and a half east of Portland. The population was 5,713 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butte County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Roseburg were members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805-06, who named it "Haida Wea" after their Indian guide Haida Gwaii on Vancouver Island in Canada. In 1848, John McLoughlin founded the local magnesium works here, which became one of the largest in Oregon. The town's growth was due to its natural resources: lumber, coal, uranium and other minerals were extracted here during the years following World War II; today much of Roseburg's economy revolves around services related to these resources as well as agriculture and tourism. One significant event that took place in Roseburg during this time was when Japanese Americans living there were subjected to internment during World War II by order of President Franklin D Roosevelt. Many people from Roseburg fought for America during those wars - including Mayor Burton Krell and his brother-in-law Harry Bridges - and many residents continue to do so today via Remembrance Day ceremonies throughout Butte County every November 3rd initiative called "A Moment Here." The postwar period saw many changes take place in Roseburg: The original magnesium works closed down around 1960; however, it reopened more than 50 years later as Northwest Mining Company with products such as lead acid batteries and aluminum cans before ceasing operations completely in 2001 amid concerns about environmental damage caused by mining activities nearby. Today much of downtown redevelopment has been done based upon property values associated with these historic industries – making it one of the most vibrant communities near Portland both aesthetically (due to its mix of Craftsman architecture dating back to 1917) and economically (due to its current job market). The post-war boom brought new residents into town - some drawn by opportunities opened up thanks to increased production from new mines within easy driving distance like Energy exploration company Western Uranium starting up just outside town limits soon after WWII ended; also trucking companies striking oil leases off shore drew early workaday miners northward looking for greener pastures where they could do their bit for society while adding valueidigs fauna back into our forests...and then things really picked up when developers got interested not just because there were plenty ol' cheap land out there but because all sorts ol' subdivisions started coming online right along State Route 99W stretching north from Petrochemical Plant Road all the way out into unincorporated Butte County! People moved out ootside town durin' Reaganomics but they've come back strong enough ta build a real city hall—not just another boxy building on State Route 99W!
