In 1865-1867 the US military built Fort Donelson in Roseburg as part of their campaign against the Bentonville Black Hawks band of outlaws. During this time period there were several skirmishes between the Army and Black Hawk warriors within the city limits of Roseburg proper. One such event occurred on July 25th 1865 when troops under General George Armstrong Custer encountered Chief White Cloud and his band near what is now Fourth Street and University Avenue; after a short exchange of gunfire (which no one was seriously injured) Custer ordered his men to withdraw without further ado; however some soldiers emerged from cover behind some trees nearby and opened fire again which killed or wounded several members of White Cloud’s group including his father-in-lawand two young children. This particular engagement is considered by many historians to be one of the most bloody episodes in American history due to its HORRIBLE casualties among both sides involved! In 1870 another fort was constructed at Madras Creek just outside town – it later became known as Fort Donelson Annex (the annex being located at Seventh Street NE). On October 4th 1870 Josephine Winchester purchased three shotguns from John Hickey for $10 each; these were her first guns ever! In 1875 various businesses within town began selling rifles over the counter – these included J H & Sons Sporting Goods Store (now known as Enterprise Hardware), Purdy’sgeneral store (later renamed Pacific Addition grocery store), Fenton’s mercantile house (later renamed Fenton Drugstore), Hubbard’s grocers store (now known as Hubbard Hardware), Gaffney & Son printing shop(later renamed Gaffney Press) And finally Wigglesworth's barbershop(now defunct). On February 14th 1880 Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Springfield Illinois; concurrent with this event numerous shots were fired intoRoseburg followed by street riots ensuing throughout much of North Salem County that night resulting in dozens dead/wounded/missing individuals including Mayor Denny Stevens, State Senators William Tilton and Salmon Pelly along with about fifty people associated with local businesses who had gathered around First Presbyterian Church for services that evening before returning home only to find flames consuming entire buildingirted with mob violence throwing stones through broken windows then looting properties until early morning when order had been restored
