Roseburg, Oregon is a small city located in the Cascade Range of western Oregon. The population was 11,827 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by James Wickersham in 1877 and has since been named after Roseburg, Washington, which was then part of Canada. The first people to live in what is now Roseburg were the Yurok tribe. In 1878, Wickersham erected a cabin on the Semiahmoo River and called it "Wickerham's Fort." In 1879, he organized a wagon train to reach California via the Columbia River. About two-thirds of that party died en route. In 1881, Wickersham married Frances Hodgson and they set out from Roseburg for Idaho Territory. They arrived at Snake Lake on July 28, 1881. On August 3, they Indianized themselves and became known as the Yurok Tribe of Western Washington (Yurok Tribe Museum). After living among their own people for about 10 years, they moved back into Oregon in 1886 when gold was discovered near present-day Bendigo. A post office was established in Roseburg on November 15th, 1888; it remained open until 1907. For many years there were no schools withinRoseburg limits; however with the opening of Eastern Oregon State College in 1962 it began to change fortunes with many residents moving away to nearby cities such as Eugene and Portland for education opportunities available outside of rural towns like Roseburg
