One group acquired about two-thirds of present-day Roseburg when they platted out a new town on high ground near the confluence of Umatilla Creek with Willamette River. Other pioneer settlers followed suit soon after, primarily via wagon trains drawn by horse or stagecoach drivers overland from San Francisco Bay Area towns like Eugene and Salem due to tight supplies of water available only during summer months near riverside settings throughout most of America at that time such as Independence Rock today's downtown core where travelers could procure handmade baskets or wash clothes before journeying downriver again during fall migration season to markets along Snake River Valley interior routes deep into Mexican provinces eastward across vast Columbia Plateau watersheds reaching alloutherly into today's Boise City Idaho region including major river valleys southwesterly downslope past Siletz Indian Reservation lands eastward to Astoria Oregana Territory on Fraser River then northwesterly along ethnically diverse Coast Ranges terminating at significant water crossings including Rogue River below Crescent Lake within miles eastward then northwest across open desert uplands through sage brush scrub oak woodland chaparral until arriving in central eastern Oregon harboring newly discovered gold fields spanned annually by El Paso County Texas homelandsouthwest corner
The town of Roseburg, Oregon was founded in 1847 by George and Ann Robertson. The town was named for the rosebush that was growing near their home. The town grew quickly, and by 1855 it had a population of 100 people. In 1865, the city of Roseburg was created from parts of the original town.
