The first European to visit the area now known as Roseburg was Jedediah Smith in 1828. He named it for General David Rose of Canada who had explored that portion of Oregon in 1825 and had been stranded on the west coast of North America with his army near what is now Portland. In 1851, settlers from Eastern Oregon founded a trading post at present-day Forest Grove on Umpqua River about 14 miles (23 km) north of present-day Roseburg. The post served as a crossroads for farmers and traders travelling between Eastern Oregon and Southern Washington; travelers often stopped here for refreshments before continuing their journey. The first school in Roseburg was built in 1875 by teachers from Oregon City under the direction of Reverend Jno. Horry. A schoolhouse remained standing until 1943 when it burned down while being used as an army barracks nearby. In 1915, parents elected to build a new school brick by brick instead of using saws because they felt this would be moreDTimes efficient than handcrafted bricks which sometimes broke during construction or fell apart over time due to moisture damage or bad weather conditions.
