In 1854, Redmond was founded by John Bidwell and his family. The town was named after Bidwell’s father, who had died in 1839. The original buildings in the town were a grocery store, hotel, Masonic Lodge and schoolhouse. In 1886, the first post office opened in Redmond. By 1912, the population of Redmond had grown to over 300 people. In 1916, Redmond became a city. In 1945, Redmond’s water system was installed and it became the first city in Oregon to have an all-seawater system. In 1951, the Douglas County Courthouse was built and it is still used today. On October 12th of that year, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen moved to Redmond from Bellevue with his wife Linda and their two children from Seattle (the only child at that time). On October 15th of that year, Microsoft opened its new building on Jackson Street which remains one of its most iconic buildings today.
