Redmond, Oregon is a city in the northwestern U.S. state of Oregon and the county seat of Multnomah County. The population was 68,531 at the 2010 census, making Redmond the fifth most populous city in Oregon.[1] Redmond is part of the Portland metropolitan area[2]. Redmond's economy includes information technology and software development, as well as manufacturing and retailing. Redmond was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Multnomah County on land that today is part of Redmond. It was first called "Otter Creek" because its water supply came from an Otter Creek tributary that emptied into Hood River. In 1851, when Congress passed the Indian Appropriations Act, it designated Multnomah County for Indians only; no white people were given official recognition until 1861 when John McLoughlin became governor of Oregon and decided to giveMultnomah County to all American Indians.[3] The town site was chosen because it had easy access to transportation due to its location on Interstate 5 (Washington). The first store opened in 1865 at what is now SW Capitol Hill Drive. By 1870, there were five stores and 30 homes in the town. There were also two churches and a school district established soon after.[4] In 1871, Washington Territory was created from parts of Oregon and Washington; Redmond became its capital. In 1872–73, Microsoft founder Paul Allen came to Redding with his family for vacation; he met some local businessmen who introduced him to their business concerns which led Allen to start Microsoft with his cousin Bill Gates in 1975.[5] In 1976–77 Microsoft employees built their own computer lab at University Place where they continued working until 1990,[6] When ICANN took over responsibility for Internet addresses in 1987 they assigned Redmond its original IANA domain name - www.microsoftonline.com - which has been used continuously ever since[7]. Redmond's population increased rapidly during this time with many new businesses opening up including several high-tech startups such as InfoPath (later acquired by Oracle) and Spice World (later acquired by Amazon). Global Crossing completed construction of a major telecommunications center here between 1993-1994 which helped spur growth even further[8], However internet service provider Comcast moved into downtown Redmond shortly afterwards reducing or eliminating competition from smaller ISPs[9]. The 2000s saw a rapid decline in population due to various factors including 9/11 terrorist attacks,[10][11][12][13][14] The dot-com bubble burst beginning around 2001,[15][16][17]"the Great Recession" starting around 2007,[18],[19][/20], methamphetamine addiction through mobile apps like Knoppers Kids Club [21]( later bought by Mydeo ),and homelessness through Black Lives Matter protests throughout central Eugene . With housing prices increasing quickly outside cities such as Portland while rents staying relatively low inside cities there have been few opportunities for people within radius commuting into central Redmond ; although annexed areas such as Beaverton include significant concentrations of jobs across multiple industries these suburbs have not seen significant job growth during this period either
Redmond, Oregon was founded in 1879 by George Redmond and his wife Clarissa. The city is named after George, who donated the land which would become its central business district. In 1912, the city limits were enlarged to include what is now Bellevue and Redmond Park. In 1959, the city became an annex of Seattle.
