In 1870s settlers began arriving who were seeking fertile farmlands close to trade routes with Russia and Central America for wheat, cotton, potatoes and meat products needed for local commerce. The railroad arrived in 1889 which made goods available faster than having to travel far away to get them so prices went down for everyone involved including farmers who now had more access to markets than ever before while also getting paid when goods were sold because transportation costs increased along with general inflation rates at that time%.
