Redmond, Oregon was founded on January 16, 1847 by farmers and entrepreneurs James K. Polk and John S. Dawson. The town was named for Major General David Morgan of the United States Army who had died in 1846 while commandeering a wagon train across the plains to California. The first settlers arrived in small boats over the Willamette River and established a trading post near what is now downtown Redmond on February 4, 1847. A ferry service connected Bellevue with Redmond until 1861 when the bridge across the river was destroyed by a flood. The original town square is located at the current intersection of South Taylor Street and East Burnside Avenue.On December 17, 1862, Washington County was organized from parts of Multnomah County and Redmond became its second county seat. After Utah Territory was created in 1896, Redmond became part of Salt Lake City as its new county seat
