Redmond is the most populous city in Clark County, and is also home to the largest contiguous area of forested land in Oregon. Redmond was founded on December 12, 1870 by Washoe Indian Chief Joseph when he and his party set out from their winter encampment on the Yakima River for what would become Redmond Township (). The first store opened in 1875 at what is now Sixth Avenue South. In 1907, John Hargrave became the first City Manager for Redmond and served until 1932 when he resigned over political differences with Mayor Harry Forster Jr.. By 1920, Redmond had reached its peak population with a total of 223 businesses employing 4,859 people; however this number decreased gradually over ensuing years as new businesses were built or moved to other cities during boom times or during World War II when many workers enlisted in military service. On July 15, 1947, Microsoft founder Paul Allen (of Seattle) purchased an acre (2 ha) lot at Northeast 84th Street and Northwest 170th Avenue for $150 from businessman Jock Whitneyworths family which formed the nucleus of Microsoft's Redmond campus today. On February 17-19, 1949 local resident Arthur Sargent organized a sit-in protest against racial discrimination at lunch counters run by Safeway Stores Incorporated located on University Boulevard near Northfield Road NW after refusing to serve black customers because they violated company policy forbidding nonwhite admission into stores untill such time as they had "completed their education." This began one yearlong boycott that led to heightened public awareness about race relations in America following decades of social ostracism towards African Americans living within white society according to popular opinion at that time - views which were being challenged more overtly through movement like civil rights protests taking place across America throughout this period despite occasional negative headlines about racism in media outlets like "The Seattle Post-Intelligencer". The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century and early 20th century, thanks to its location on the main route between Portland and Seattle. Today, Redmond is one of the most populous cities in Northwest America and home to over 250,000 people. Redmond's history began with Scandinavian settlers who came to what is now Redmond in 1859. They were part of a group of homesteaders that sailed from Norway across the North Atlantic Ocean to arrive at Point Defiance Bay in Puget Sound on July 3rd, 1859. From there they developed a trading post called "Norwegian Fort" before moving upriver to found what would become Redmond. The first known resident of what would become Redmond was Norwegian trader Rasmus Olsen who arrived in 1858. He built a cabin near present-day Pioneer Square and named his settlement "Norwegian Fort." In 1861, Olsen moved his store and residence upstream along Washington Street (now First Avenue) towards what would later be called Pioneer Square. Soon after he added another store and house on Third Avenue which he named "Fremont House". In 1865, Danish immigrant Ole Johannesen arrived at Fremont House with his wife Hilda and their children Ole (1866), Nils (1868), Karen (1871), Einar (1875), Ellen (1877) and Christoffer (1879). Johannesen had come from Mulvane parish west of Copenhagen via shipmates Lars Christensen and Peder Kjærgaard who landed at Vancouver Island on September 24th, 1850 aboard HMS Beagle under Commander John Caird.* After arriving in Oregon he continued trade with Indians until May 14th when an party led by Chief Osage attacked him outside his ranch house located today's SW corner of High Street/State Route 97 & SE corner of State Route 99 . Petersen killed four men including Chief Osage with rifle but failed to capture any scalps or captives; instead he returned safely back ashore.* *[Caird Collection #14] The event is considered significant because it marked first contact between white Americans and Native Americans* After leaving Fremont House, Ole Johannesen established himself as one of the leading merchants in town* In 1870 Danish immigrant Søren Pedersen arrived from Langeland County island Bornholm where he had raised cattle for farmers around Breda on Lolland Bay.* When news reached Denmark that Sweden had won independence from Denmark they appealed for help finding new farmland so Søren Pedersen left for Northern California arriving at Bendigo November 10th 1840 aboard SS Royal Dutch East Indies . On arrival he met Wm Haddon & family who took him into their home where he resided until October 1863 when Wm Haddon sold him land about 2 miles east side OF US Highway 97 near NE tip Of Hillcrest Rd*. ThereafterSoren Pedersen settled down & engaged himself extensively farming until about 1889 when ill health forced him to move again this time settling near NW corner OfSEHighway 97&NW Corner OfHillcrest Rd*.
