In 1909, the first gunfire in Redmond took place when a group of men from nearby Bend shot at an animal on the property of John W. Bennett. The rounds created quite a recoil and caused some damage to the home, but no one was injured. In 1912, a new range was opened in Redmond by Rear Admiral Harry Dickson. This range became known as “Dickson’s” because it allowed for firing of both rifles and handguns. bullet types then began to be developed specifically for use in this location including .30 caliber bullets and .45 caliber bullets which helped make Redmond one of the most important cities within Oregon during this time period. At that time redding had only two roads: Bellevue Avenue east to NE 101st Avenue (later NE 183rd Avenue)andNE 157th Avenue west toNW 137th Place (then SE 3rd Place). Herein began Redmonds growth as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and abundant water resources which allowed for large crops such as wheat, corn and tobacco while also providing enough Isolation so that citizens could remain unmolested during times of war or economic depression
