Redmond, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, built on the site of an early Mormon settlement in 1847. The population was 30,671 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in Oregon after Salem. Redmond is home to The Microsoft Store and other Microsoft businesses as well as University of Washington Redmond campus for higher education and research. Redmond was founded by Latter-day Saints who arrived in what is now Oregon during the 1840s. In 1847, they founded a small town on a piece of land that would later become Redmond Township. The first post office was established in 1848 and the first store opened its doors in 1850. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living within the township boundaries. The growth of Redmond began slowly but steadily over time. In 1861, a railroad was constructed through town and it soon became one of the premier shopping destinations for locals and tourists alike due to its close proximity to both Portland and Seattle. In 1903, growth resumed somewhat more rapidly when King County purchased much of what is now eastern Redmond Township from the LDS Church for $10 per acre (about US$2 million today). This made it possible for developers to build high-end housing developments on large tracts ofland that had been donated by church members or their families since before World War II. During World War II, many American soldiers stationed at Fort Meyer near downtown Redmond took advantage of its recreational opportunities such as swimmingpools and tennis courts while they awaited their discharge or awaited new orders overseas. As war raged on outside North America, Fort Meyer saw little use other than providing quarters for military personnel until 1946 when it reverted back to civilian control with full access to all its facilities including pool, tennis courts etc.. After years of prayer and discussion among community members about whether or not to convert it into an Army base/ Training Center some decided against any such move given how important Fort Meyer had become locally as a place where people could come together for recreation purposes during wartime despite technically being under occupation by Japan! Following World War II however development recommenced rapidly even though no troops ever served at Fort Meyer again! In 1957 Microsoft located 122 acres north east from downtown Redmond along State Route 523 which then became known asMicrosoft Way . This location allowed them easy access to Interstate 5 which connected them with Seattle & Portland quickly across Puget Sound . It also provided ample space should they ever decide they needed additional buildings beyond just their original store & office suite which still occupies part of that property today ! It wasn’t until 1984 when local vehicle manufacturer Pierce traded land next door (at 6th Ave NE) in order purchase better terms from then owner Western Pacific Railway after purchasing adjacent lands south side Of Highway 97& main lot adjacent thereto; this left Pierce with an unimproved agricultural area totaling approximately 1400 acres contiguous Witchuwee River Valley stretching eastward including portions valued at $118 million current day !! Alongside this unfurnished agricultural area resides significant undeveloped potential resources comprising: Coal beds & seams estimated at: 1 trillion cubic feet @ $13/cf coal; Natural Gas estimated at: 3 trillion cubic feet @ $8/cf natural gas; Gold deposits between Yellowtail Lake & Trout Creek Unit Potential Gold Mine Estimate currently sitting around 870 thousand dollars!!
