Redmond, Oregon is a city located in the Willamette Valley of the U.S. state of Oregon. It was founded in 1882 by Danish immigrants, and has been an agricultural and munitions manufacturing center since before that time. Ammunition production began in Redmond in 1903, when the city's first arms company, The Armory Company of Redmond, started manufacturing rifle ammunition. The company continued to produce ammunition until 1907. In 1912, The Armory Company merged with Winchester Manufacturing Company to form Winchester-Winchester Arms Corporation. From 1920 through 1984, Winchester-Winchester Arms Corporation produced shotgun ammunition at its Eugene plant; this activity stopped after the plant was closed down by United States Department of Commerce investigations into malfunctions with shotguns made using cyanide-treated ammunition. In 1862, when Territorial Governor David Condon designated Redmond as the site for the Provisional Government of Oregon Territory due to lack of land east of Interstate 5, he also designated it as the temporary capital of Oregon Territory. By 1865, however, Congress had passed legislation designating Portland as the permanent capital of Oregon Territory and Condon moved his headquarters there permanently. Like most other towns inClarkCounty during this time period - including Vancouver--Portland became rapidly gentrifying during Reconstruction due largely to waves of immigration from Southern Europe which began around 1865-1867inburgh groups like Knights Templar (founded 1868), Masons (founded 1871), Irish Catholics (founded 1888), Italians (founded 1886), Poles (founded 1907), Scandinavian Americans (opened their first store here in 1911) - Redmond experienced a reasonably high level OF white flight from various parts of Greater Portland beginning around 1870s until well into the 1920s replaced by increasingly Mexican American immigrants generally seeking cheaper housing prices relative to available jobs opportunities outside OfCityDowntown). This process accelerated during World War II when many families fled Market Street redlining along portions then known as "the Strip." DuringWWII many businesses closed down or relocated following bombings that destroyed downtown areas; some reopened within weeks or months once again prospering due to wartime economies surges often characterized as ' Miracle years '.
