In December 1830, James Kapp organized a party of men from York County who set out for what would become Portland for exploration purposes only to return four weeks later empty-handed due to bad weather at Mount Hood.[2] Kapp then founded Fort George Wright near modern day Pioneer Square where he traded goods with local Native Americans and constructed an adobe fortification that served as his headquarters during his explorations into Nisqually Valley[3][4].
