On July 4, 1886, during much celebration following General George Armstrong Custer's death at tipi camp on May 25 near Holmead Ranch outside present day downtown Portland, several hundred thousand people attended his funeral procession through downtown streets then along Second Narrows avenue to Multnomah County Jail where he had been held since his surrender from Indians at Deadwood Creek on October 6 that year; many participants walked or took public transportation back into town for the gathering Streets closed off throughout Downtown as People marched including One Hundred Black Men who Carried Flags with Gold Star emblems
